Tinnitus – Ringing or Buzzing in the Ears

Often referred to as “ringing in the ears”, tinnitus is a medical term for the perception of sound in one or both ears when no external sound can be detected by others. Some people who suffer from tinnitus hear hissing, roaring, whistling, chirping, or clicking rather than ringing. Tinnitus can be intermittent or constant with single or multiple tones, and its perceived volume can range from subtle to intense.

In many cases, the cause of tinnitus cannot be determined. There are many potential catalysts that are known to trigger or worsen tinnitus:

accumulation of earwax
exposure to loud sounds
head or neck injuries
problems with blood circulation
jaw misalignment
ear or sinus infections certain types of tumors
cardiovascular disease
certain medications

The majority of people who suffer from tinnitus also have hearing loss.

While there are no cures, there are treatments to help you manage tinnitus symptoms.

Sound generators create a type of “white noise” sound that distracts your brain from the ringing or buzzing sounds, which can reduce their intensity.

There are also Apps for your Smartphone that can provide different sounds.

Some specialized hearing instruments are designed with features that help to provide relief from tinnitus.

For several years I was always straining to hear, and even so, frequently missed what was being said. I avoided joining groups of people as there was no hope of understanding. Now I just relax and can really enjoy life again. The aids are easy to use and no bother to wear. Yes, they were expensive, but absolutely worth it. I had tried less costly ones by mail but they were useless. These are set to my prescription and worked from the start. Also – very important – the ongoing checks and care by Professional Audiology give me complete confidence. As I told Erica, in case of fire I would save my hearing aids second, after my pets, of course!

My experience with Dana Fiske and all the employees at Professional Audiology has been superb! All are very well knowledged and most important very caring. Their adherence to schedules are always prompt. I have walked in the office and had my hearing aids cleaned without notice. Very professional organization. I have been a patient for over 10 years.

It should be an easy sale to sell a TV streamer with every hearing aid. I thought I could hear every word with just the aid but I didn’t. Testing with and then without the streamer is like day and night. I hear everything especially difficult context like Walking Dead and Sherlock. Accents used to be difficult but are now a breeze.

Excellent attention and care. I'd had an audiological exam previously at an academic medical center. I needed to check and see where I stood compared to that baseline. I got that and then very appropriate guidance and prescription to deal with the further hearing loss which I now have.And now I've been back for a near term follow-up. I enjoy the tech involved in addressing my hearing loss, particularly because I have used ear buds for a long time. Having been a patient at another 'audiologist' where I never actually saw an audiologist, it was a wonderful experience to be seen by Dr. Rush and realize that she understood what I was experiencing with my (fairly new) hearing aids. I was given a thorough hearing exam using latest technology, then met with audiologist who explain results in terms I could understand! I recently had a hearing test for the first time in my adult life, and didn't know what to expect. My experience at Professional Audiology, and with Dr. Racheal Rush, was extremely positive. It was becoming very evident that I had hearing loss. Booked an appointment with ease, was able to complete the paperwork online and confirm they accept my insurance. Day of my appointment, I was greeted warmly and met with Dr. Regan on time. While I was not surprised by the results, I was encouraged by the diagnosis and options provided to me by Dr. Regan. They already had all my insurance payment information and after reviewing my options, I was very comfortable with the product I chose. Two weeks later, I went for my fitting and education on how to use the hearing aids. It was all explained very well, all questions answered and I left amazed at what I didn't know I wasn't hearing! I wear glasses to improve my vision and no reason to not wear hearing aids to improve my hearing! It is nearly impossible to see my hearing aids and caring for them seems to very easy. I am so happy I went to Professional Audiology and look forward to many years of care with them.

Dr Rush was very kind and caring. I knew my hearing had been getting worse over the last year . Something that is difficult to accept. I wanted to have a hearing screening done with a professional audiologist before going to a hearing aid center. Fortunately my insurance covers hearing aids , but another location. Which I already knew, but Dr. Rush informed me that my insurance did cover the cost of hearing aids, but her office did participate in this coverage. Dr Rush took the time to review my options of companies and brands of hearing aids that are good quality with my insurance coverage. How kind to take the time with me for this advice. I will see Dr Rush annually for my screenings. I hope in the future, her practice will be part of my network. Thank you Dr Rush.

After trying to get hearing aids through my ENT office, I did some more research about the maintenance, technical repairs, and programming that modern hearing aids need, as well as the importance of picking from multiple brands of hearing aids suitable for my particular hearing loss. I was so pleased with the responsiveness, friendliness, availability, and technical knowledge of the doctors at Professional Audiology and the entire staff. Hearing aids are complicated! I worked with audiologist Nancy Charest. Her background, skills, and knowledge of hearing aids is excellent. She was able and willing to answer all my questions and make the adjustments I asked for, making clear that if I wished to reverse a decision after trying it out, that would not be a problem. When I emailed or called, I generally spoke with Patti, the technician, who was likewise helpful and knowledgeable. Despite me being a few minutes late( after receiving a courtesy call to find out if I was ok), I was greeted by very friendly, helpful staff members.Dr. Ryan was very thorough with her exam and explained everything to me without acting rushed.I’ve been involved with Dr. Ryan for five years now and she always remembers little bits of information about me. There is a reason Professional appears in the name: They are very professional and efficient. I selected this team for help with my tinnitus which was making it difficult to understand what people were saying as well as being quite annoying. They guided me to the proper hearing devices and have been superlative ever since. I have had my BlueTooth hearing devices for about 5 years and they are still in tip top shape. I use them daily and don’t know what I would do without them. I did misplace them for a few days and the team took care of me with a pair of loaner aids. They were a bit cautious about ordering NEW aids, which I was prepared to do, because they just knew they would “pop up”. And they did, so they bailed me out for 3 days and were so very helpful in the process, that when the day comes that I need to replace my current aids, I will be visiting Professional Audiology for my next pair.

Dana Fiske and his team at Professional Audiology have provided diagnosis/treatment/guidance for my hearing impairment for over 40 years, and I have *never* been disappointed. I can't think of any other business I have patronized for so long, with 100% satisfaction. As my hearing has declined over the years, they have always fitted me with reliable, effective hearing aids and provided exemplary audiology care -- programming the aids to meet my needs, routine exams and testing, occasional maintenance of the devices, and thoughtful assessment of my gradually changing needs. Considering the severity of my hearing loss, it is fair to say that the service provided by Professional Audiology is the primary reason I can continue to work professionally and live a full social life. Everyone in the offices I visit, (mostly Portsmouth and occasionally Stratham) is patient, respectful and helpful. I recommend them enthusiastically.

My dad is a World War II veteran. His visit with Professional Audiology was outstanding and so rewarding. My dad has spent over Thousand of dollars on other hearing aides. Always still said the dreaded words, what I can’t hear you for years.He has VA benefits, his Audiologist had him try on hearing aids. She then talked low to him. He answered her. My dad said to her, please keep talking you have a lovely voice and I can hear you clearly. Then he cried.After serving two years on the front line being a Heavy Artillery Gunner and walking beside the heavy artillery tanks. He has never heard so clear, without everyone else hearing also.Being one of dads caretaker it also brought tears to my eyes. Finally no tv on Extra WOW and repeating over and over he could hear a soft voice I can’t even hardly hear.Thank you for you continued support of our Service men and women and especially for my 97 year old dad. He know likes to go to a doctor and get wonderful results, thank you.The name Professional Audiology isn’t just a company name. It’s a Company that doesn’t just sell a product. It takes care of your needs and doesn’t just leave you with a bill and no better hearing. Thanks again Dad can hear so good. I have been a client of Professional Audiology in Stratham for a decade or more. They work well as a team, which makes scheduling visits for cleaning or repairs very convenient.
